Nerd Metal Fridays: Blind Guardian

Going old-school today with Germany’s Blind Guardian. For over 30 years they’ve been turning high-concept ideas into heavy-duty tunes and helping to define what today’s artists mean when they talk symphonic metal. Nerdy? Well they managed to make an entire concept album out of Tolkien’s The Silmarillion (Nightfall in Middle-Earth).

If unironic songs about hobbits, elves and rings aren’t really your thing, you could do worse than to check out this little ditty about Ragnarok.

You know, it seems that all I’ve covered so far are European artists. We’ve had two German bands, two examples from the Swedes, one Finnish group, and a Brit. Is there anyone on this side of the pond giving them a run for the nerd metal money? Check back next week for some loud geeky goodness from the good old USA.

  1. Hi-

I noticed someone in the crowd waving a red flag with a white-bordered black cross- it looked like a Nazi flag with the swastika medallion left off. Do you know anything about the group’s politics, or about their fans? Google is being singularly unhelpful with answers, here.

    1. As far as I know they are apolitical. Hansi is a self-described left leaning Social Democrat, so I wouldn’t expect any Nazi sympathies there. They are a fairly mainstream German band and given their laws about such things there, I don’t see then having reached that level of success if they promoted anything of the sort.
